Samsung’s message throughout 2022 has been loud and clear: Refine, don’t rebuild. We saw this with the flagship Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus, the mid-range Galaxy A53 5G, and even its Galaxy Watch 5 series smartwatches — all products that stick to familiar forms with only subtle changes inside and out . Samsung’s ultra-premium, ultra-expensive Galaxy Z Fold 4 also couldn’t escape the trend, but are minor steps up to the cutting edge of smartphone technology enough? Find out in our Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 review.
About this Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 review: I tested the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 over a period of 12 days. It was running Android 12L on July 1, 2022 security patch. The unit was provided by Samsung for this review.
Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 4 alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 4 as part of the August 2022 Unpacked event. This makes the Galaxy Z Fold 3 a success in a way that can only be described as not falling far from the apple tree. The overall design of the Book-style foldable is almost identical to that of its predecessor, save for a few millimeters and grams shaved here and there.
Starting from the outside, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 still sports a 6.2-inch AMOLED display, complete with 120Hz dynamic refresh rate. It’s a bit sharper and a fraction wider than the external display on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and the only hindrance is the central 10MP punch hole camera. Samsung’s exterior display is ringed by an Armor aluminum frame with a new, glossy finish for 2022. The durable outer package also retains its IPX8 rating for water resistance, while the outer display is now covered by Gorilla Glass Victus Plus.
Once you crack open that hard shell, you’re greeted by another crisp AMOLED panel, this time measuring 7.6 inches in diagonal and covered with Samsung’s latest generation, proprietary Ultra Thin Glass technology. Resolution is once again slightly sharper than its predecessor and is paired with a 120Hz dynamic refresh rate, 1,200 nits peak brightness, and a slightly better 90.9% screen-to-body ratio (88.8%). Moderately boxier aspect ratio. The Galaxy Z Fold 4’s internal display is only affected by the second-generation 4MP under-display selfie camera, although it is much less visible than the previous model.
